Where are We?

This week was extra fun because we met up with one of my friends from high school and his wife who are in Chicago for a summer internship as well. Peter and I grew up in the same ward and hung out in the same group in high school but hadn't kept in touch super well after our missions. I had seen his wife Alexa post about them spending the summer in Chicago so I made sure to reach out and found out they were living a couple blocks away from us and were in our same ward! They have been in Chicago since mid-May so they knew their way around the city and wanted to take us to a restaurant they had heard good things about close to the jujitsu gym Peter works out at. Turns out Pete and Jaden were two peas in a pod, both LOVE University of Utah football, food, Jocko Willink podcasts, and are both studying cybersecurity. Needless to say they had plenty to talk about and we had a great evening out with them.

They took us to a barbeque place called Green Smoked Meats that was honestly delicious. Who would have thought we would find great barbeque in the middle of Chicago but we did!

As we walked back home along the river we were just chatting when all of the sudden we passed a guy who casually said "there's a naked bike race up ahead." I wasn't sure I heard him correctly but sure enough as we hit the corner there were I kid you not HUNDREDS of bikers passing by completely naked. It was one of those moments were we all looked at each other and were like "where are we?" and just busted up laughing.

After a lot of deliberation I worked up the courage to google "naked bike race downtown chicago" and an event popped right up and turns out it was a protest against fossil fuels. The boys could not get over how uncomfortable it would be to ride a bike fully unclothed. I really wanted to know at one point did everyone get naked. Because you certainly wouldn't leave your apartment like that you'd probably have to meet up at a park and then all strip down and hop on your bikes to go protest fossil fuels.

You honestly can't make this stuff up!

We were so glad we witnessed it with friends and also so glad we were on the corner and only saw backsides instead of a frontal view. Yikes.

Peaches

  • Watching Jaden talk to Greg's Roomba vacuum like it's a dog
  • Made banana bread muffins
  • Groceries are surprisingly cheaper here than Pittsburgh. Proof is a gallon of milk is around $2.99 where it is almost 5 bucks back in PA!
  • Meeting up with friends
  • Eating good barbeque
  • Realizing how blessed we are to have found friends and familiar faces every place we've moved
  • Walking along the Riverwalk

Pits

  • We have some seriously giant spiders outside of our building. As long as they stay on that side of the glass I'm fine. Really don't want to find one of them in our apartment though
  • Econ homework... need I say more?

Lessons Learned

  • You just never know what you'll see walking through the streets of Chicago
  • A friend of mine said to me one day "I'm convinced no matter where you go in the world you'll find someone from Davis High," how true that is! And I love it!
