Apple Picking

This week I drug the crew apple picking at Soergels. Soergels farm might actually be one of my favorite places in Pittsburgh, maybe it's because it is a little respite from the city but I just have loved everytime we get to go there. I have always wanted to do a pick your own fruit trip and ever since we went to NY last year I wanted to go to apple orchards near us. So we all met up at Soergels and got 5lb bags to fill up with apples. It was so hot outside and my contact prescription is up and I'm all out of contacts so I had to wear my glasses and they were literally fogging up at the heat and humidity. Suffice it to say that it was not a fall apple picking excursion but more like a summer apple picking excursion.

It was a lot of fun to be with the group and grab lunch at the cafe and sip cold apple cider. There also were amazing sunflower fields and a pick your own bouquet field with some really pretty assorted flowers and filler.

And the best part was our two bags of apples I got to bring home and make apple butter. Apple butter was something I had never heard of until I went on my mission to TN. One of the members in Greeneville would make apple butter in the fall which is basically apple jam with strong notes of cinnamon and nutmeg and is seriously so yummy on bread and toast. I also found several recipes that use apple butter as a key ingredient so after I boiled down the apples and spices (which made our apartment smell AMAZING) for 4 hours I made some apple butter muffins. I'm not sure it was as good as Sister Creech's apple butter but I hope I made her proud.

Pits

  • We have crickets inside our house, and they must be so confused they have their days and nights confused because they chirp all day long. Luckily since we are on the top floor we don't hear them that much but when you go downstairs it is so loud. I haven't been able to pinpoint exactly where they are but it has been going on for a few days now and is so weird.
  • Received some tough news from family this week. Hard to be away when loved ones are grieving
  • Homework
  • Tried a Mediterranean restaurant by our house that unfortunately was gross
  • In an attempt to make Accounting more fun I have tried to make my study guides cute. It's not really working but definitely helps me remember more easily as I study for exams
